A dream came true again for Maria Serratos in October, but this time in a much bigger way.

Serratos re-opened Maria’s Mexican Restaurant at the corner of southbound Fort Street and Keppen, six blocks north of Southfield Road. What used to be a carryout restaurant now also has a dining room.

“I like working with people and I like cooking,” said Serratos, who has many years of experience in the food industry. “I like being here, being there, doing things.”

And, she also likes that family is a big part of Maria’s Mexican Restaurant. Her husband and son, both named Gabriel, are heavily involved. Her 3-year-old granddaughter, Sofia, even helps. In addition, the husband-and-wife team of Ernesto and Nelda Lara are a cook and a server, respectively.

The house specialties at Maria’s Mexican Restaurant include:

• Sopes, like Serratos’ grandmother used to make. They’re deep-fried tortilla bowls filled with ground beef, chicken, cheese and beans — “anything that you like,” Serratos said.

• Fajitas and fajita mixes, including shrimp, chicken and beef.

• Botanas, which are layered chips with beans and a choice of ground beef, chicken, melted cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, avocadoes and jalapenos.

• Handmade tamales, enchiladas and burritos.

• Steak a la tampiquena, which is grilled steak, onions and peppers served with beans, cheese enchiladas, ground beef, guacamoles, sour cream, lettuce and tomatoes.

• And, for dessert, flan, with a choice of pineapple, chocolate or caramel. Maria’s Mexican Restaurant is working on launching catering and a buffet.

In addition to the Mexican fare, Serratos can make cakes. She supplies them to a friend’s restaurant in southwest Detroit.

Maria’s Mexican Restaurant accepts major credit cards.
