The Chelsea Standard and The Dexter Leader newspapers cover Dexter and Chelsea villages, as well Webster, Lima, Scio, Lyndon, Sylvan and Dexter townships. They share advertising, but zone out most editorial content. The Chelsea Standard has a circulation of 4,900 and The Dexter Leader's is 3,600. The weekly papers are published on Thursday. The Chelsea Standard was established in 1871 and The Dexter Leader two years earlier, in 1869. Heritage Newspapers purchased the newspapers in October 1995 from Walter P. and the late Helen M. Leonard. The Leonards published the papers from 1947 to 1995. 21st Century Newspapers purchased the newspapers in 2001 and the Journal Register Co., based in Trenton, N.J., bought 21st Century Newspapers in 2004. The publications include news about local government, the schools, high school sports and crime, as well as feature stories about local people of interest, community events, births, engagements, weddings, obituaries and commentary. The newspapers have won 79 awards, recognizing news reporting, feature writing, sports reporting, editorial content and design, from the Michigan Press Association since 1998 and 11 awards from the Society of Professional Journalists since 1999. For the first time in MPA history, The Chelsea Standard was named Newspaper of the Year in 2004 and The Dexter Leader won the same honor in 2005. In addition, The Dexter Leader won three national awards for reporting from the Suburban Newspapers of America in 2004 and three in 2005, including Best Sports Section, and The Chelsea Standard won one in 2005.
