  Demographic Information

The View has been serving the tri-community area, which consists of the city of Belleville and the townships of Van Buren and Sumpter, since the early 1980s. Original owners Sharron and Clarence Russell started "The Sumpter View" as a four-page weekly newsletter on pink photocopy paper in January 1983. The Russells believed that Sumpter Township needed its own news outlet. Over the next decade, the newsletter was transformed into a weekly newspaper published on Thursdays. "Sumpter" was dropped from the paper's name and its headquarters were moved to downtown Belleville. In 1998, The View was added to the growing Heritage Newspapers chain, and in 2002, Heritage became a subsidiary of 21st Century Newspapers. Today, The View keeps residents of the tri-community area informed about what is happening in local government, the schools, the business community and local churches and civic organizations, with a circulation of about 2,900. The View strives to inform and entertain its readers with a mix of local news, opinion and cultural commentary, and continues to record births, graduations, marriages, deaths and other important community events.
